Last year I was introduced to the concept of “selecting a word” for a new year into my life. I believe in the power of intentional planning and visualization and was excited at the idea of choosing a word that could guide me in my decisions and how I wanted to show up based on where I was currently at in my life and understanding of myself.
I felt moved to choose the word CREATION. And what happened exactly? Well to name a few things: I started some passion projects with my husband like launching a podcast and a badass online course, I built and grew more loving and intimate relationships, oh and…I found out I was pregnant just days after selecting my word and then had my first baby in the Fall. Pretty cool, huh?
You could say that those things would have happened whether or not I picked the word “Creation” for 2016. That’s fine, and maybe they would have. My point is that I took time to get intentional as hell on what I was seeking to experience in that year. And “Creation” aligned with where I was at and where I saw myself going.
Now I’m seeing the theme of a word for the year pop up a lot in different blogs and social media posts. Might be a trend for some people, but I prefer to see it as a habit, and it’s one whose hype I support.
How do you choose your word?
My advice for choosing you word is to take some time for self-reflection. Think a little bit about the previous year – do an audit of sorts in certain areas of your life.
- Think about what you experienced as far as your mental, emotional, spiritual, social and physical aspects of yourself, and then what you’d like to see moving forward.
- You could also break it down into terms of the 6 F’s of your life: faith, family, friends, fitness, finance and fun.
- Any patterns showing up? Is there something you consistently see that you’d like more of, or you’d like to keep momentum of and take it to the next level?
When you come up with a word, define it for yourself. Words and concepts for intention and manifestation can mean different things to all of us. For instance, if you’re set on making LOVE your word, what the heck does “love” mean to you? Be specific! Write it out and clear detail – what it means and what it looks like for you to feel and be in the state of that word or idea.
For example, Creation to me meant (means) connecting to the possibilities, fluent in conversation with the Universe to manifest powerfully. I know that sounds kinda up in the sky. To bring it down a bit – it was about breathing life into something, to bring something forth. Kinda like how Michelangelo said he saw the statue David already there in the stone slab. He was just doing his job of releasing the figure from inside.
So what’s my word for 2017? Answer: VALUE.
I chose Value because it resonated so powerfully with everything that’s going on in my life right now. I’m at a stage where I’m owning my responsibility and power to create circumstances in my life in a way I didn’t know was possible.
This kind of Value, to me, means honoring my gifts, time, energy, resources and being bold. It’s also about who I am for others, and the value I bring to their lives. And not by coincidence, but intentional design, a huge part of what I do in my lifestyle coaching and mission statement development with clients is about understanding and identifying their core values – it’s really the fundamental piece of the process. It’s about VALUE – in who I am for myself, for others, and for the world around me.
Make it YOUR year. Choose a word, and go forth confident in its ability to unlock some pretty awesome things for you.
